Davao Region’s Outstanding Volunteers Named
Director Maria Lourdes D. Lim, Regional Director of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) – XI, recently announced Davao Region’s official nominees to the National Search for Outstanding Volunteers (SOV) 2009.
Mrs. Irene M. Ang of the Pantukan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Compostela Valley Province and the Barangay Service Point Officers (BSPO) Association of Davao del Sur, Inc. were named as Davao Region’s Official Nominees to the SOV 2009 Individual and Organization categories, respectively.
Mrs. Ang, a former public school teacher and currently an entrepreneur, is an avid supporter of public elementary and secondary schools in the Municipality of Pantukan in Compostela Valley. Her selfless contributions and services rendered have made a very big difference in the lives of disadvantaged school children in her community.
The BSPO, Inc., on the other hand, is a civic organization that has been serving as an extension arm of the Provincial Population Office of Davao del Sur for over twenty years now. The organization’s assistance to the Davao del Sur Provincial Government led to wider awareness and deeper appreciation among townfolks on the local government’s family planning and reproductive health services.
The nominees were selected after a series of evaluation conducted by the Davao Regional Search Committee (RSC) composed of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) XI, Philippine Information Agency (PIA) XI, City Planning and Development Office (CPDO)-Davao City, Davao Medical School Foundation –Institute of Primary Health Care (IPHC), and the NEDA Regional Office XI as Committee Chair.
Earlier this year, the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA), the government agency mandated to promote and coordinate volunteer programs and services in the Philippines, launched this nationwide Search.
The SOV is an annual recognition for volunteers and volunteer organizations that highlight best practices and models of volunteering in the country. It serves as the centerpiece of the celebration of the National Volunteer Month (NVM) every December. The NVM is a yearlong celebration that encourages and supports the implementation of volunteering activities in their various modes and forms by individuals, groups and organizations.
Conferment of national awardees will be held on December 10, 2009 in Manila. Director Lim said that the National Screening Committee, thru the PNVSCA has yet to release the list of national awardees but in the meantime, Mrs. Ang and the BSPO, Inc. will be recognized by the Regional Development Council (RDC) XI for their shining examples of volunteer works in a simple ceremony during the Council’s meeting in December 2009 to be held in Davao City.
